Sim RPG Tutorial part 2: Assiginging Stats with Variables

In part 2 of the Sim RPG tutorial, we will learn how to give your avatar some stats using Flash variables. This can be useful if he finds himself getting into a fight, needs to barter a price down using his charisma, or even if it’s cash. To see part one of the tutorial “Character Creation”, please click here.

I will run through a few basic suggestions for this part of the tutorial, but as I have already created something that will cover this whole section I will just post a link to it. You can view it on Kongregate here and it covers everything that needs to be done at this stage in our game’s development. Make sure to combine it with the avatar creation tool you created in part one of the tutorial.

So here’s a few things you can make for your character:

  • Strength – How much damage is inflicted when he attacks.
  • Charisma – Is he liked? Is he hated? The higher the charisma, the nicer he is.
  • Dexterity – If it ever gets to the point that your character might need to fire a bow or a gun, this is worth baring in mind for his accuracy.
  • Health / Stamina – The most important thing in a turn based Sim RPG is probably the stamina. It enables your character to perform menial and important tasks during the days and upgrade their stats systematically.
  • Cash – Do you want a poor character? Or a wealthy one? The power is in your hands.
